Learn about NMSDC's activities, accomplishments on advocacy agenda

Adopted in 2022, NMSDC’s advocacy agenda consists of three focus areas:

1. Access to contracts and procurement opportunities.
2. Access to capital, technology/relations issues, and accountability.
3. A federal minority business enterprise (MBE) designation.

As we continue to serve as a growth engine for NMSDC-certified minority businesses, we will share the activities and accomplishments of our advocacy agenda with you on a quarterly basis.

The below summary covers the time frame from July 1 – Sept. 30.

Access to Contracts and Procurement Opportunities

• On July 15, NMSDC attended The Hill's round table discussion on "Scaling Small Businesses through a Resilient, Diverse Supply Chain." 
• As chair of the Council on Underserved Communities Subcommittee on Contracts and Purchasing, Ying McGuire, CEO and president, met with Bibi Hidalgo, associate administrator of the SBA, to discuss SBA contracting and how minority businesses can gain additional contracts. 
• On July 28, NMSDC issued a statement on the CHIPS for America Act.
• In August, NMSDC provided comments regarding the: 
• Economic Development Provisions of the Community Reinvestment Act Regulations Docket (R-1769) and RIN (7100-AG29), to the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, and Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.
• U.S. Senate Small Business Committee 8A Improvements Act, and ultimately endorsed the Federal Contracting Fairness Act.
• In September, NMSDC provided comments regarding the resolution recognizing the 50th Anniversary of the National Minority Supplier Development Council, which will be introduced by Rep. Emanuel Cleaver's office (D-Mo.).
• On Sept. 30, Lisa Morris, vice president of strategic alliances and programs at NMSDC, moderated "A Contract with Black America" Increasing Federal Contracting and Procurement Opportunites for Black-Owned Businesses" panel discussion at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's 51st Annual Legislative Conference. 

Access to Capital, Technology/Relations Issues, and Accountability

• On Sept. 16, the Business Consortium Fund announced over $5M in new capital for minority businesses. 

A Federal MBE Designation 

• NMSDC continued discussing a Federal MBE designation with Rep. Emanuel Cleaver's office (D-Mo.) to discuss. 

Other Activities 

• On July 8, Ying McGuire, CEO and president of NMSDC, attended the third meeting of the SBA Council on Underserved Communities Meeting. 
• On July 13, NMSDC attended the 2022 Ascend National Conference, hosted by Ascend in partnership with JPMorgan Chase & Co. and the University of Washington Foster School of Business. The conference sessions centered around how to utilize the strength of the network to reach the collective goal of growing businesses owned by people of color, women, and veterans. 
• On July 15, NMSDC participated in the USBC National Conference and School of Chamber Management.
• On Sept. 21, Ying McGuire, CEO and president of NMSDC, was a "Doing Business with Prime Contractors" keynote speaker at MBDA's MED Week.
• From Sept. 19-21, NMSDC attended AAPISTRONG and on Sept. 20, NMSDC and National Ace signed a historic partnership alliance agreement.
